American photographer Steve Barru has lived in China for 20 years and is currently based in Beijing. His photos are informed by a unique understanding of China's people, society, politics and culture. Steve came by that understanding the hard way – he studied Chinese and speaks it fluently; he operated his own business in China for more than a decade; he has worked as an advisor to overseas companies and expatriate professionals in China; he served on the board of a community-based international school; he has been a teacher. Steve’s intimacy with his subject matter let's you see China from a unique perspective.
Steve specializes in editorial, stock and documentary photography, in both color and black & white. Much of his work is of people, catching them on the fly while walking down the street or in candid portraits. When appropriate, Steve captions his images with concise, informative descriptions which add value to his photographic vision.
The fast approaching 2008 Olympics present exciting photographic challenges. Capturing the Olympics means being able to capture the uniqueness of Beijing. Steve's experience and insights offer an unparalleled visual avenue to this historic event and the astonishing city that is hosting it.
